Migraines: A Headache…Supersized!

September 30, 2024

We’ve all fallen victim to it at one time or another: the headache. That persistent, aching pain that affects portions of the head and neck, usually as a result of stress or tension. Less common but much more severe is the migraine, a particular type of headache where the pain is so intense, it is downright debilitating.

People who suffer from migraines react to a variety of factors and events, called triggers. These triggers can vary from person to person and most often, it is a combination of triggers — not any one thing or event — that initiates an attack.

Some of the most common are:

  • Bright lights, loud noises, strong odors
  • Hormonal changes in women
  • Emotional stress
  • Changes in the weather and/or barometric pressure
  • Too much physical exertion
  • Alcohol and caffeine
  • Foods that contain MSG or artificial sweeteners containing aspartame.

An aura is a precursor to the migraine — feelings and symptoms you notice approximately 10 to 30 minutes before the migraine begins. You might see flashing lights, shimmering spots or zigzag lines that float across your field of vision; you might experience changes in vision, muscle weakness and a tingling sensation in a hand or face.
